Chapter Seventeen

“No,” AJ said out loud to the dark. She sat straight up with her weapon in her hand. Had she yelled? The nightmare left her sweating. She could still hear the warning cries of crows echo over the three bodies in Star’s driveway with Katie’s slender body curled between the doctor and his wife, one small hand above her head. “Sweet mother,” she gasped and pushed herself out of the motel bed before she could examine one more piece of her wrecked inner landscape.

Almost falling, she tangled with her boots by the bed. Righting herself, she stumbled into the bathroom and turned on the shower. A few minutes under the water cleared her head. She hated the dreams where you weren’t sure if you slept or lived or what was real.

Wrapped in two towels, she opened her laptop and immediately went to Katie’s Blue Ridge, Inc. site, searching for the photo Bonnie had mentioned. There it was, under About Us. A smile spread through her. Katie was turning away from the camera, looking over her shoulder, left hand gripping a briefcase, right hand raised in a good-bye. The full-skirted, knee-length summer dress outlined Katie’s body, shifting with her motion. Her curly black hair partially covered the right side of her face leaving only that incredible smile emphasized in the sun. AJ fumbled with her phone and downloaded the photo.

What had Bonnie asked her? Was she interested? She certainly was something. It had been a long time since she’d talked to anyone or flirted like she did with Katie. AJ held up the phone, looked at the photo again, and debated whether or not to call. What would she say? That she was glad Katie was alive and safe? Or that she’d rather be there, not here? She scowled at the floor and then grinned. Bren Black, super agent, could talk to Katie. Hopefully, Katie would still be sound asleep and she could leave a message.

AJ practiced heavy breathing before she dialed. “It’s Bren, reporting in. I’m out of ammo, stuck in a hole in the ground but not sure where.” Heavy breathing. “I can hear them coming but don’t worry. You know I’ll survive.” AJ panted into the phone. “I’ll figure this out in the next forty seconds. Just turn the page and you’ll see what my incredible imagination and ingenuity has cooked up.” More heavy breathing. “Have to go. They’re almost here.” AJ let a long pause go by, then slipped into her calm, emotionless announcer’s voice. “Please acknowledge receipt of this message.” She hung up with a big grin. Dumb but fun. She began to dress, humming to herself. She stopped when she realized the song was “Secret Agent Man.”

Ten minutes later, she was out the door for a run to clear her head. If she stayed on the sidewalks, snow or ice would not be a problem. She jogged in place at one of only three streetlights in town. The quiet night was interrupted by the growl of a diesel motor and she looked over her shoulder.
